Adopt a Dog : Make a Friend Thursday, Jul 1 2010

Girly10 (my daughter) and I went to check out YelpBR.  I have heard many things about this no-kill dog adoption facility and wanted to see what it was all about.  Let me tell you, they are a wonderful organization!  They have many very sweet dogs up for adoption.  As you can imagine they need lots of help.  They need volunteers as well as monetary donations for supplies, vet services, etc.

I have partenered up with these fine people and will start sharing with you the the wonderful canines they have up for adoption and also share the upcoming events they will be hosting.  Stay tuned and be pre-warned…these dogs will steal your heart!

2010 Gonzales Jambalaya Festival Thursday, May 27 2010

It’s that time of year again folks!  Time for the Jambalaya Festival here in beautiful Gonzales, Louisiana!

For 43 years, we have celebrated the wonderful food that put us on the map, Jambalaya!  What is Jambalaya you ask?  OK, I know I have readers not from here so here ya go.  Jambalaya is a wonderful blend of pork, chicken, sausage and/or andoullie cooked down to tender perfection, married with the flavors of onion, bell pepper, garlic and other seasonings then cooked all together with rice.  Melt in your mouth goodness!  Jambalaya is probably one of my most favorite foods.

This Memorial Day weekend, the Jambalaya Festival runs again in Gonzales, Louisiana.  The Festival starts on Thursday May 27, 2010 and will run through Sunday May 30, 2010.  As always, there will be a Jambalaya cooking contest.  They even have a “mini-pot” contest for the younger Jambalaya cooks.  There will be amusement park rides with discounted bracelet prices for day or weekend access.  I can’t wait to see the World Record Jambalaya Pot Cooking 700 lbs of rice!  That’s Crazy!

There will also be a great line up of bands over the four days.  Chee-Weez, Bits and Pieces, Bag of Donuts, and Na Na Sha, just to name a few.  The band I am most excited about is Chris LeBlanc and Luther Kent. I went to school with Chris and know that a lot of school mates follow to see him play.  I am hoping to hear him play and catch up with some school mates from the past.  Notice I didn’t say old school mates 🙂

If you have some time this weekend, come out to our beautiful city and partake in the festivities!

Gonzales Jambalaya Country Christmas Wednesday, Dec 2 2009

Thursday, December 3, 2009 will be the 18th Annual Christmas Tree lighting party in Gonzales, Louisiana.  The events will take place at the Gonzales Civic Center where the big guy himself, Santa Claus will be handing out gifts to local children and listening to all of their wish lists.  Gonzales Christmas

The lighting of the Christmas tree will be the main attraction at 6:00 pm and you can walk around Jambalaya Park with your family and enjoy the thousands of lights that have been put out for your enjoyment.

I understand that there will be Girl Scouts singing Christmas carols, Center Stage Performing Arts Academy will be providing live entertainment and the Jambalaya Festival Association will serve bowls of jambalaya.  Sounds like there will be a good time had by all!  Best of all….Admission is Free!

Three Ascension Parish Bands Perform at Showcase of Marching Bands Monday, Nov 9 2009

Saturday, November 7, 2009, Ascension Parish had a strong showing from their parish.  Three of the local high schools, Dutchtown, East Ascension and St. Amant competed in the Showcase of Marching Bands at ULL’s Cajun Field in Lafayette, Louisiana.

All three bands had excellent performances.  It was such a pleasure to watch our Ascension Parish band students excel in what they do.  The crowd loved what they saw!

A huge round of applause is needed for all of the band directors, students and parents.  All of your hard work certainly showed on Saturday night.  I personally thank the band directors for their dedication and genuine care of the students that they teach. You have inspired these young people to excel at so many levels.  Each of you are truly special.  I also would like to thank all of the parents that help the bands.  Without the help you all give, much of this would not be possible.  From the bottom of my heart…THANK YOU.

It is no secret that I am a St. Amant High School Band Fan…  I have a special interest there. With that being said, you can click the video below to view the performance of the St. Amant Golden Gator Band.

I will monitor YouTube and as I see the other schools performances uploaded I will provide a link for those as well.

St. Amant High School Golden Gator Marching Band Attends Louisiana Showcase of Marching Bands Friday, Nov 6 2009

Marching season is coming to an end…  The St. Amant High School Golden Gator Marching Band will culminate the season in Lafayette, Louisiana on Saturday November 7, 2009 at the Louisiana Showcase of Marching Bands. The event will be held at ULL Cajun Field in Lafayette, Louisiana

Over 30 high school bands from across Louisiana come to compete.  The first performance begins at 9:00am and the awards will be presented at 7:30pm.  All day admission is only $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for children ages 5-12, children 4 and under are free.

I heard someone the other day describe this event as “being like Drumline (the movie) only with more class”.  This is a pretty good description of the event.  The best bands from the state come to one place to comptete for their bragging rights. Marching bands are surely different from what I remember so many years ago!

Good luck to the St. Amant High School Golden Gator band. You guys Rock!
